It was a long night, but the June 6 primaries are over. Many results were expected in the contests in eight states last night. However, there were some surprises.

In the Montana Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Jon Tester, the state senate president, and an organic farmer to boot, beat favored state auditor John Morrison. And he beat him overwhelmingly, by 60.84 to 35.41 percent of the vote.   You can see Mr. Tester's candidate questionnaire responses here.

In California's 11th district, Global Solutions PAC endorsed in both the Republican and Democratic primaries.  We endorsed former Representative Paul "Pete" McCloskey in the Republican primary, against incumbent Richard Pombo.  Mr. McCloskey helped create the Endangered Species Act and was a widely respected Congressman.  Representative Pombo, who hasn't faced a serious challenger in the primaries recently, garnered 28,944 votes vs. McCloskey's 14,856. This is an impressive showing for McCloskey, who moved from his old base in South Bay area into Pombo's district to challenge Rep. Pombo.

In the Democratic primary in this same district, Global Solutions PAC endorsed Jerry McNerney, an engineer who runs a wind turbine company.  Mr. McNerney, whose questionnaire responses are here, handily defeated his Democratic opponent Steve Filson.  McNerney garnered 52.6% versus Filson's 28.5%.

The special election runoff to replace disgraced and jailed former Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham is also over. It was a well-fought race in the 50th district, the northern part of San Diego County. Global Solutions PAC endorsed Francine Busby, but she didn't win. She was shy by about 5,000 votes. She picked up 45.46% of the vote but former Representative Bilbray won 49.33%. Mr. Bilbray will finish out Cunningham's current term in the 109th Congress.

Busby did win her Democratic primary (both the run off and primary votes were on the same ballot), so she will again face off against Bilbray in November.  You can see her candidate questionnaire responses here.
