ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was created by the U.N. Security Council in 1993 in response to the violent war crimes committed during the Yugoslav conflict in the early 1990’s. Located in The Hague, Netherlands, its objective is to bring to justice those accountable for grave violations of international law and the Geneva Conventions.
The ICTY plays an important role in maintaining peace and security in the volatile region. By holding perpetrators of war crimes accountable, retaliatory actions are preventable. Effectively implementing the objectives of this institution builds confidence in the initiatives of the legal process.
