ACTION: Call your senator to support funding for monitoring nuclear testing

The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty

The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) is an international organization that, through an International Monitoring System, detects nuclear explosions. The United States, currently a member, owes $138.3 million in back dues to the organization. Nuclear testing poses risks to everyone, and it is vital that we uphold our promises, lead by example, and support funding for the CTBTO.

The United States signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) in September of 2006, which bans all nuclear explosions, for any purpose, warlike or peaceful. The CTBTO monitors the implementation of the treaty and the establishment of a monitoring system that offers access to sensitive information that the U.S. can't attain on its own. The U.S. intelligence community also values the system because it can catch small, hard-to-detect nuclear events.

What can you do?

We need to keep our promises and pay our bills. Not funding our part of the CTBTO makes it less likely for contributing nations to do their part. And that makes it harder for the successful monitoring of nuclear explosions on the ground.

You can help by calling both of your senators' foreign policy staff and request that your senators co-sponsor the legislation. Use the simple look-up form to find contact information for your senators' foreign policy staffers. Visit, http://globalsolutions.org/fps
